Carroll Foy Shares Positive Vision to Move Virginia Forward, Shake Up the Status Quo, and Ability to Win in June and November
(WOODBRIDGE, VA) – During tonight’s final televised Democratic gubernatorial debate, Del. Jennifer Carroll Foy highlighted her positive vision to move Virginia forward and shake up the status quo to provide real solutions to the problems she and so many Virginians face. She also laid out why she is the best candidate to energize and turn out the diverse coalition necessary to win against out-of-touch politicians, first in June and again in November against Republican Glenn Youngkin, and preserve the Democratic majority in the General Assembly.
Watch five highlights from the final televised Democratic gubernatorial debate below:
WATCH: In her opening statement, Carroll Foy highlighted the stakes of the election in November and the importance of nominating a candidate who can inspire the turnout and build the coalition needed to beat Glenn Youngkin and protect the Democratic majority in the legislature.
“We jeopardize our majority and the governorship if we do what Republicans want and nominate a former governor who failed to keep his promises, and who almost lost his election to an extreme, Trump Republican. To beat Glenn Youngkin, we need to elect an inspiring leader who has bold ideas, who will get our people to the polls. And I have a record of getting things done for the people of Virginia, and I will never stop fighting for you as Governor.”
WATCH: As Carroll Foy has said, “It’s time for a working mom to represent working families in Richmond.”
“We have an economy that works very well for the very wealthy. But it doesn’t work well for working families…I have plans and policies to uplift working families, and as a working mom, I will get the job done.”
WATCH: Carroll Foy shared her commitment to real police reform, highlighting her work to ban chokeholds as a Delegate, and her plans as Governor to ensure independent investigations of police shootings, expand civilian review boards, and tackle real criminal justice reform.
“One year ago, George Floyd was not supposed to be a martyr. But he was murdered during a police encounter. Since then, hundreds of people have been killed during police encounters, including Donovon Lynch in Virginia Beach, whose father, Wayne Lynch, is here with me tonight as my special guest. No parent should ever have to bury a child. That’s why as a legislator, I passed a bill to prohibit the use of chokeholds by law enforcement officers, so we don’t have an Eric Garner situation here in Virginia. But as your Governor, I will be bold and transformational. I will pass a Donovon Lynch bill which would mandate civilian review boards throughout Virginia, and have them apply to sheriff’s offices as well. I will end qualified immunity, and I will make the necessary investments in the communities that have been most hurt and harmed by mass incarceration, disinvestment, and the war on drugs.”
WATCH: Carroll Foy: “Terry McAuliffe, not all Black people are convicted felons.”
“We are more than restoration of rights…We need a Governor who will treat us in a holistic way to root out the inequities in our healthcare, in our economy, in our environment, in all of the systems…to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to thrive here in Virginia.”
WATCH: Carroll Foy closed the final debate by highlighting how she not only has passed legislation uplifting communities across Virginia, but has walked in Virginians’ shoes and shared in their struggles.
“In order for people to know that their quality of life will improve, is to be sure that you elect the governor who understands. Most of us have legislative successes, but I have the lived experience – working multiple minimum wage jobs just to get by, being able to afford the high cost of healthcare, living in communities that have been redlined, so I will put forth intentional policies to uplift our communities in a real way, and I’ve done it before.”
Carroll Foy’s grassroots, people-powered movement is organizing in communities in every corner of the Commonwealth. Her campaign has mobilized over a thousand volunteers to engage voters and share Carroll Foy’s positive vision for Virginia. To date, community leaders, more unions than any other candidate in the race, and organizations representing millions of working people have endorsed her candidacy. She has been recognized as the “most formidable” challenger to McAuliffe and the “favorite in the race” of everyday Virginians and the organizations that represent them.
