Carroll Foy: “State sponsored executions have no place in a moral, just society… As Governor, I’ll fight to reform our criminal justice system so that it is fair and just for all Virginians.”
(Woodbridge, VA) – Today, Jennifer Carroll Foy released a statement celebrating Governor Northam signing the repeal of the death penalty in Virginia. Virginia is now the first Southern state to end the use of capital punishment.
“As the first public defender elected to the General Assembly, I have fought for a more equitable and just criminal justice system in the courthouse and in the statehouse. I have long supported the repeal of the death penalty in Virginia which has disproportionately taken the lives of people of color, the poor, and people with mental illness for far too long,” said Del. Carroll Foy. “Today, we gladly leave this inhumane and ineffective punishment in the past where it belongs. State sponsored executions have no place in a moral, just society.
“I’m grateful to everyone who has carried this fight over generations, from grassroots activists to Governor Northam and his leadership, and stand with communities and families who have been wrongfully hurt. Today is a hard-fought win to be celebrated, and I look forward as Governor to building on our progress and continuing the work to ensure our criminal justice system is fair and just for all Virginians.”
Jennifer Carroll Foy is committed to fighting for a fair, just and equitable criminal justice system. She has been a consistent advocate to abolish the death penalty and has actively fought to repeal the death penalty during her time as a Delegate in the Commonwealth’s legislature and as a candidate for Governor.
